Holistic development through movement, sport, and values.
To promote students’ holistic development in the intellectual, emotional, social and physical domains. To foster enjoyment of physical activity as a means of contributing to a healthy lifestyle in the long term, and to promote the harmonious development of the body and its motor capacities as the foundation for balanced growth, seeking to reach each student’s maximum potential according to their individual abilities and strengths.
Through Physical Education, we also aim to stimulate critical and creative thinking skills, as well as reflection.
We approach school sports practice based on a participatory educational philosophy that promotes the values of sport, providing opportunities for everyone, respecting individual times and abilities, while also striving to achieve the best possible sporting results.
We encourage mixed-gender sports exploration, challenging our students to engage in a wide range of multisport experiences. This enriches their motor repertoire through the broad development of coordinative abilities and enables positive interdisciplinary transfer, within a climate of equality between girls and boys.
include sports, athletics, gymnastics, recreational, rhythmic and aquatic activities (through swimming lessons) within the school timetable.

St. Brendan’s School develops its Physical Education and Health (PEH) programme in accordance with National Programme requirements, within the framework of the PYP and MYP International Programmes. Our aim is to promote students’ holistic development in the intellectual, psychosocial and physical domains. We seek to foster enjoyment of physical activity as a means of contributing to a healthy lifestyle in the long term and to promote the harmonious development of the body and its capacities as the basis for balanced growth. We strive to unlock each student’s maximum potential according to their individual abilities and strengths.
Therefore, PEH is not limited to students’ participation in games and sports, but rather aims to develop a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are transferable to students’ lives and reflected in a healthy, balanced and sustainable lifestyle.
In this sense, the school’s approach to learning experiences in PEH is three-dimensional. The following model clearly illustrates this concept.
At our school, we understand competitive sports as a comprehensive educational opportunity that goes far beyond results. These are spaces where students come together, challenge themselves, get to know themselves and others, and live experiences that support their personal growth.
Through sport, we aim for each student to enjoy themselves, feel included, build relationships and learn to compete in a healthy way, respecting others and themselves. Every training session and sporting event provides opportunities to develop confidence, decision-making, cooperation and reflection, while strengthening the body and caring for emotional wellbeing.
All students have the opportunity to engage in these sports, either during curricular or extracurricular hours.
Competition is approached from a participatory and formative perspective. The importance of results varies according to the student’s stage of schooling, but the primary goal is always to prioritise the formative value of this experience.
In some tournaments, team selection may take into account criteria related to students’ sustained commitment to the sport, such as attendance at interschool competitions and the demonstration of institutional learner profile attributes.
The school invites and supports families to be part of this journey, always respecting that participation is a personal and family choice.
.
We encourage curiosity on learning about movement, through movement and from movement itself. Students inquire into key aspects of a healthy lifestyle and are encouraged to reflect so they can apply this learning to their lives.
We support students in developing in-depth knowledge of each discipline, its rules and principles, while fostering critical and strategic thinking to solve complex situations in changing contexts. Students are expected to apply terminology related to physical activity and health effectively to communicate their understanding.
We create situations that challenge students to think, choose and solve problems. Every game and exercise becomes an opportunity to make informed decisions, learn from them and find solutions in dynamic and changing contexts.
We promote respectful and constructive communication, recognising dialogue as key to group wellbeing. Students learn to express themselves, listen and share knowledge and emotions, strengthening coexistence both inside and outside the PE classroom.
We foster respect for rules and for all those involved in the game. Accepting decisions, acknowledging mistakes and taking responsibility for one’s actions are part of the learning process, recognising that sport also teaches honesty and integrity.
We invite students to view the game from different perspectives, enabling them to respectfully accept the decisions of referees, coaches and peers. Analysing strategies and adapting to the unexpected broadens their outlook and helps them apply learning in new situations, both inside and outside class.
We build spaces where empathy and commitment to others are essential. Students learn to support, encourage and care for their peers, understanding that true growth happens when we grow together.
We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination. We explore new ideas and innovative strategies independently and collaboratively. We demonstrate ingenuity and resilience when facing change and challenges.
We emphasise the importance of physical and mental balance. We want our students to celebrate victory appropriately and accept defeat with emotional balance, sensitivity, empathy and respect.
We see sports practice as a space for continuous reflection. Students think about their actions, recognise progress, identify learning and enrich their personal and collective growth from multiple perspectives.
