About St. Brendan’s School

A bilingual community inspired by courage, commitment, and perseverance.

Why the Name St. Brendan’s?

St. Brendan was an Irish monk and an exceptional navigator. He was born in 484 AD and is said to have discovered a new land after sailing for seven years across treacherous seas.

His boat was small and fragile, yet he never lacked courage or commitment to persevere in reaching his promised land, a dream and source of inspiration.

His perseverance and constant dedication to excellence, together with his determination to achieve his goals, inspire us and set the direction we strive to follow.

Our School

Founded as a non-profit civil association, St. Brendan’s School today forms a large community with a strong institutional culture and a clear vision for the future.

St. Brendan’s School is a bilingual, non-denominational school that promotes a constructivist approach centred on the child as a whole person. Learning is built on the knowledge children bring with them, connecting it with new experiences and achieving meaningful outcomes.

This approach fosters the development of skills, attitudes, and critical thinking. Cooperative learning and individual talents are nurtured through recognition of diverse learning styles, promoting the development of multiple intelligences.

We see ethical education as a shared responsibility between the school community and families. The focus is on learning to value, decide, and act, guided by the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.

The goal is to educate CITIZENS OF THE WORLD who respect a shared humanity, are self-aware, guided by strong principles, and sensitive to the needs of their community.

Secular School

St. Brendan’s School promotes an open and inclusive approach to diverse cultures, beliefs, and values, fostering understanding through respect and tolerance.

Accredited School

St. Brendan’s School is fully authorized by the Primary and Secondary Education Councils at all levels.

Service-Learning

Service-Learning Approach as the IB Action Framework and as part of our identity as an IB World School

Service experiences at St. Brendan’s

Service experiences at St. Brendan’s are guided by a Service-Learning model. Service-Learning involves the development and application of knowledge and skills to address identified community needs. Through this research-based approach, students participate in service initiatives often linked to prior curriculum studies, applying skills, knowledge, and values developed through these studies. Service-Learning allows students to connect academic disciplines with real-life service experiences. It provides students with the opportunity to understand their capacity to make meaningful contributions to their community and society. Students develop and apply academic knowledge and personal and social skills to real-life situations involving decision-making, problem-solving, proposing initiatives, and taking responsibility for their actions. The goal is for students to positively impact society, improving lives or addressing environmental or living-being issues. Service-Learning benefits all involved: students continue to develop applied skills and knowledge, while the community gains through reciprocal collaboration. It promotes the development of skills, attitudes, and values aligned with the IB’s principles and the Learner Profile.

General Objectives

Through Service-Learning, students should be able to:

  • Develop and apply knowledge and skills to meet real community needs.
  • Grow as leaders who take initiative, solve problems, and collaborate with others.
  • Enjoy both learning and service experiences.
  • Develop solidarity and responsibility toward others.
  • Deepen the understanding of themselves, their community, and society through meaningful reflection.
  • Enrich and strengthen their school curriculum experience.

Different approaches to Service-Learning at St. Brendan’s include:

  • Ongoing service: Addressing a need over time and following a long-term action plan to build perseverance and commitment.
  • Service at the School: Serving needs within the school to prepare for external community action.
  • Community service: Participating in local service to build awareness and understanding of social issues.
  • Immediate need service: Responding to urgent situations, such as disasters, through rapid evaluation and planned action.
  • Fundraising: Planning and executing initiatives based on students’ choice of organisation in need, interests, skills, and talents.
  • International service: Encouraging participation in local service as preparation for global service opportunities, ensuring students understand context and circumstances.
  • Volunteering: Engaging in experiences organised by peers, the school, or external groups.
  • Curriculum-based service: Teachers plan units with embedded Service-Learning opportunities for students to respond to.

(CAS Guide 2015, Service-Learning Guide 2015)

The best Service-Learning occurs as a continuous, regular experience, with the stages of Service-Learning (Investigation, Planning, Action, Reflection, and Demonstration) providing a structured framework. Reflection is key, enabling students to explore ideas, skills, strengths, limitations, and areas for improvement, and to consider how prior knowledge can be applied in new contexts.
