Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a holistic, student-centred approach where learning means inquiring, reflecting, and taking action, with students as active participants in their own learning journey.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

To contribute to each child’s development by recognising and respecting their individuality. To educate for life by transmitting values that endure over time, fostering the development of a critical and constructive spirit, and promoting enjoyment and camaraderie within an environment of harmony, coherence, safety and care.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for children aged 3 to 12 and offers a holistic, rigorous and student-centred education that recognises children as active agents in their own learning. At St. Brendan’s School, learning means inquiring, reflecting and taking action. Students explore the world around them through meaningful questions, connecting knowledge, skills and attitudes through authentic and relevant learning experiences. Our aim is to promote academic development alongside emotional, social and physical wellbeing, nurturing children who are curious, caring, informed and committed.

During Primary School, students engage in units of inquiry collaboratively developed in Spanish and English, which integrate the different subject areas—language (Spanish and English), mathematics, science, history, geography, the arts, and personal, social and physical education—around big ideas that transcend individual disciplines.

Teachers support this process by designing challenging, differentiated and meaningful learning experiences that respect individual learning rhythms and encourage collaboration, autonomy and critical thinking.

Throughout Primary School, students develop an increasingly deep understanding of themselves and the world around them, cultivating an international mindset, a strong sense of voice and a deep responsibility towards others. In this way, we prepare children to face future challenges and to move confidently and purposefully through the next stages of their education.
